History of Pedraza

The town's name likely comes from the Roman "Pretaria," though recorded history begins with Fernando Gómez de Albornoz, who received lordship of Pedraza from King Enrique II of Castilla in 1369. The territory later passed to the Herrera family, then to the constables of Castile through marriage between Blanca Herrera and Bernardino Fernández de Velasco. This noble family maintained control until the abolition of feudal lordships.

During their rule, Pedraza became a stopping point for artists, nobles and monarchs. The town's golden age brought prosperity through exporting merino wool to northern Europe and producing fine textiles that competed with Flemish goods. Most of today's houses and manor buildings date from this prosperous period.
